TJ
Johnson & his Band.
One of Europe's unique vocal talents. Singer and Piano player TJ Johnson transcends the boundaries of Jazz, Blues, Soul, Country and Gospel music to create his own rich distinctive sound. TJ is backed by his own top notch Jazz and Blues band.
TJ Johnson began his career in music aged fiteen singing and playing honky tonk piano for a small bar in his home town of Stockport. He was soon discovered by Max Collie and toured internationally with his band for three years. Gigs with Max included the highly successful "New Orleans Mardi Gras Show" playing virtually every major theatre in the country.
In the early nineties TJ left to persue a solo career and is now, according to a recent critic in a popular UK jazz magazine, "one of the finest vocalists and R&B piano players on the jazz scene today". His voice is truly tremendous with enormous power and roots. Combined with swinging piano his music is a blend of Jazz, R&B Country Blues and soulful Saloon songs and his personal stamp can be clearly heard on whatever material he performs. He is usually accompanied by his own band, which is always made up of some of the finest, most impressive Jazz & Blues muscians in the country.
He plays regular dates at the 100 Club in London, Dover Street, Jagz in Ascot, at festivals in the UK - including Birmingham, Abersoche, Bute, Upton and Edinburgh - where his band was described in the Edinburgh Herald as "spicey modern day jazz". His band is also a popular feature at festivals in Europe including the Silda Jazz festival, Gothenburg and Silkenbourg.
Recntly TJ has again proven his natural talent as a musician by playing the drums with his young New Orleans band "Bourbon Kick".
TJ has recorded 7 albums over the past fifteen years, his latest "The Heat of the Night", released through Lake Records, is generally regarded as his best yet. The album includes popular and lesser knon numbers and demonstrates how with thought these tunes can have a new lease of life. It combines R&B with country blues and soulful jazz - and according to a recent critic "swings like hell"!
